So, it's hot down here. Real hot. It's been above 90* for weeks (that's above 32C for you UKers). Normally it's above 95* for the hottest part of the day. The coolest it gets is 79* at the very coolest part of the day, just before sunrise. Add in the heat index, it's 110* during the day and 85* at night. Inside a car on a hot, humid day the temperature goes up about 20* per minute--usually it tops off at about 140*--and I have to get into that car, repeatedly, every day. Now I've lived down south in the USA my entire life, but my disposition is not made for the heat really. I get dizzy if I'm outside too long in the heat, and the sun gives me massive headaches (I am a sunglasses addict). Sometimes, if it's hot enough and I'm outside long enough, I get heat rash. Wee red bumps usually on my chest along with a burning sensation.
All that's okay, but then a big dumby like me decides to install snuggly wool roving in the middle of all this heat. Well after a long day of cleaning my house and then being in and out of my car today, I got heat rash ON MY HEAD under my dreads. Itching, burning, hot hot hot. And the problem with heat rash is, it's hard to shake. Once it's there it stays for a long while--until you put something cold on it. Normally I do a baggy with ice cubes or just a cool rag, but ALL that damn wool was in my way!
After scratching at it for 30 minutes I knew what I had to do--take out the dreads. Cry cry cry! I didn't want to, they are marvelous. So I decided to try one last thing, ICE WATER! I made a very cold batch of ice water and poured it down my scalp. Oh My God--immediate relief, a lovely tingling sensation, total refreshment.
Whether it's heat rash, or just a bit of the itchies, I seriously suggest pouring some ice cold water in between your dreads. It's a wonderful, invigorating feeling. Such a simple solution! Sitting under a fan afterward keeps that fresh feeling going.
