This is a question that comes up a lot for new makers of wool dreads. Let's discuss here how much roving we use and for what length/thickness.

Here's how I calculate mine. I know the supplier I order from sells 1oz of wool roving that is about 60 inches long. Depending on how many times you split the wool and how long you want them, you can figure out how much you need. For instance:
30 super thick DEs at 10 inches long. For this you would not split the wool at all. So, each DE is a total of 20 inches (10x2). That means you can get 3 DEs out of each 1oz. So you'd need 10oz for 30 super thick DEs at 10 inches long.
50 sharpie thick DEs at 20 inches long. For this you would split the wool 4 times. Each DE is 40 inches long. 40x50=2,000. Then divide by 4; 2000/4=500. So you need 500 inches. 500/60=8.333 So you'd need 9oz of wool for 50 sharpie thick DEs at 20 inches.
40 highlighter thick DEs at 30 inches. For this you'd split the wool 2 times. Each DE is 60 inches long. 60x40=2400inches. The divide by 2; 2400/2=1200 inches. 1200/60=20oz. So you'd need 20oz of wool for 40 highlighter thick DEs at 30 inches.
