This is a question that comes up a lot for people new to dread making, so let's get the ball rolling. How many dreads do you get out of 1 pack of hair? What length and thickness? What style?

Most people seem to get 8 dreads out of a pack, which is 'normal' thickness (if there is such a thing!) which I'd say is about 0.5cm across I'd be interested what sellers have to say on this! <3

This is always such a hard question for me to answer as I blend many colors together when I am making any number of dreads... Even for just an accent kit I have been known to open up around 4 packs of hair so I can use all the colors. But for total amount I would say I am in the 7-10 packs of hair range for a full set (this of course is also dependant on thickness and length of the set).

This is a question that comes up a lot for people new to dread making, so let's get the ball rolling. How many dreads do you get out of 1 pack of hair? What length and thickness? What style? so, i need 4-5 packages of synthetic hair for a full set of crocheted Dreads. A full set means 30 double-ended and 10 single-ended.

- It depends on the packet of hair, the type of dread and the length of dread. - Crochet and naturals generally need less hair to make bigger dreads and the shorter the dread the less hair is needed. For long twisted SE (Single Enders, about 22-24 inches)I can get between 8 and 12 single enders Sharpie marker width depending on the brand and amount of hair in the packet. For dreads half that length I get twice as many. So 16-24 twisted, Sharpie thickness Dreads I would say for medium dreads 12- 18 SE, twisted, Sharpie thickness Dreads A way to figure it out for long Single Enders is to split the packet into somewhat equal sections, try starting with 8 sections. (If you doing crochet I would try 12 sections)
Split your whole packet of hair into 2 somewhat equal parts
Split each section into 2 more somewhat equal parts (you now have 4 sections)
Split teach of those into 2 (to give you 8 sections)
(PS I used wire bag ties to keep each section separate, its handy) To check that the eighth of a section is right for you use the Rivet Licker method althairextensions.proboards.com/thread/159/splitting-bulk-dreads-get-packIf its too big try 10 or 12 sections. If its too small for your needs try 6 or heaven forbid 4 for giant fatties! If you are going for natural or crochet I would recommend starting. Honestly this is just a vague starting point for more precise advice once again is depends on packet size/brand, type and length of dread. Rivet Lickers tutorial is the best go to on this though.

Ohww and in addition to Rivet Licker tutorial. Say you want an 18 inch dread and are using 24 inches or hair, you might want to use a smaller section as the dread being shorter will fatten it up.

I get 8 dreads out of a bag of hair as standard. I always buy 6 bags of hair. The only time this changes is if I'm making small dreads as I'll cut the hair in half.

This question is so beyond me at this point, like I seriously couldn't even begin to say! I guess it's changed a lot since the good ol' days... more brands available, every one slightly different. Different style work up differently... I can't even be useful here!

I've noticed, since beginning to buy and make a large quantity of similar dreads all at once, that brand makes a HUGE difference. HUGE.
RastaFri and Lexy (and the rare Buyhair pack) are my least favorite to work with and I usually end up wasting a portion of hair because of how difficult I find them to handle.
Assuming we're making DEs that measure about 13-16 inches in length: Modu Anytime, Bobbie Boss: 4-6 BnG: 5-8 Janet, Silky Straight KK, RastaFri, Lexy and Buyhair: 3-5 Silky Straight KK: 3-5
I've also noticed variation between packs. I'm not sure if it's my error or the error of the manufacturer, but there have been times where I've managed to get 8 dreads out of one pack of BnG and the next bag only gets me about 5. I generally assume it's something I'm doing weird.
I've also found that the way I stagger the hair and how much I backcomb can make a difference. For example, if I'm making an SE instead of making a U shape, I'll make more of a J shape with the hair prior to backcombing which extends the length of the dread and allows me to get more dreads out of a bag/a fuller dread with less whispy ends.
