Thanks for making this thread First question, does anyone cut their own hair rather than go to a hairdresser to have it done, and if so what kind of method do you use?

I do! I cut my hair to exactly 10 inches. I use a piece of cardboard cut to ten inches to guide me. I pull small sections of hair straight off my head at a 90* angle then snip. Gives my hair bounce and life while natural and is a good length for doing installs. If I'm feeling extra clumsy I'll get my mom to help in the back.

I've only cut my own hair once, using the method of tying a ponytail at the top of the head and cutting across the ponytail, but I tied it too far back and ended up giving myself an extremely steep A-line (I sort of like A-lines on other people, but utterly despise them on myself). I'm going to try it again now it's grown out, and also want to have an undercut put back in if I can find someone with a steady hand to help

Oh, and I keep up my shaved sides myself as well. I kind of suck at that though... oh well.

I've had an undercut 3 times, once done by myself and twice by a hairdresser, and each time it's gone horribly wrong. The sectioning is a nightmare; how hard can it really be to create a perfectly straight line going all the way around the head? I'm currently debating whether to make my newest undercut level with the tops of my ears, or level with my eyebrows. Luckily my hair is quite thick so when worn down would still look like a full head of hair, so...decisions, decisions

Do top ears, see how you like it. If you want more, get it moved up to eye brows.

Yeah that's what I did too, I get my mom to cut my hair as she is the only one I can trust with it. I did ear level and apparently she did it kinda uneven between the two sides so we brought it up to the eyebrow next time around. I too have the super thick hair! Best investment I ever made was a clipper set even came with good little scissors for when I cut my fringe back in. My advice for cutting your own hair (after a few fails) use lots of mirrors and if possible have a 2nd set of hands and eyes to check over. If your hair is by chance curly like mine don't fret too hard over perfect evenness if your cutting your hair wet as no one will tell when it's dry!

Well, when I did it myself last time I took it up to eyebrow level, but it was really wonky...at least with an ear level shave it only requires sectioning around the back, as opposed to in the sides as well. I'll ask around some friends to see if anyone feels confident enough to give it a try, but if not I'll have to see a barber, as I imagine they'll have more confidence doing clipper cuts than hairdressers. I'll update when I eventually get round to having it done

Try to get a hairdresser that does a lot of men's cuts. I've got a hairdresser friend that does men's cuts mostly, and she's a whiz with clippers.

Will do The first time I went to a hairdresser who looked like I had 9 heads when I described what I wanted, even when I gave her a photo showing clearly what I wanted. Alarm bells should have started ringing but stupidly I persisted, and she cut it really badly. If a hairdresser doesn't have the confidence to do something specific they should say so, to save potentially ruining anyone's hair

Oh I agree 100% or they think they know better and do what they want because it's trendy. That is why I don't trust any of them with my hair :c

Definitely. Curse my cack-handedness when it comes to sectioning my own hair; it's the sectioning that bothers me, more than the actual shaving...
