Hey! I would really appreciate some help when it comes to photographing dread kits. I'm not really sure how best to present them. I used to bundle them into lots of 5 or 10 and lay them down to photograph them. I've since been advised to stop doing this and so I only do this when I'm feeling super lazy but need to get them out. Since I've been either hanging them on a broom and getting someone to hold it in place while I photo or the same with a clothes hanger. Not good when I'm home alone. I'm not really sure how else to do it. I do have a nice wooden floor I can use inside but don't know how to lay the dread down nicely without them being banded together. Thanks!

Why've you been advised to stop laying them down? Merry does that and makes a thing of it. With little extras in the photos to match the dreads. I think it looks amazing and makes the photography as artistic as the dreads themselves!

I would really love to see people try to work with the theme of the dreads for example putting the dreads into a shape that goes with the theme/inspiration. Mermaid tail for mermaid dreads, witch hat for witch dreads, tree for forest inspired dreads ect. I know this wouldn't always be an option but I like FUN pictures. I don't mind the classics (bundles, broom handles, racks) but when you see a lot of pictures a day of dreads the ones that always really stick in my head are the ones outside the box. I also really enjoy when close up of the texture of the dreads are provided with the big picture!

I love this photo! I don't know if octopus goes with dark rainbow, but it's cute as a button.

I love all the fun photos Merry's posts! So elegant and beautiful. And when people get really artistic with their constant background, like Imp and Petal. Sometimes this can be time consuming though, and I don't usually have the time to do that. I prefer the clean look myself. I do this with a dollar store presentation board laid flat. I use something else like a yard stick to line all the dreads against, and take it away for the photos. This simple set-up is so easy and can be placed anywhere that has good lighting at the time. I do both indoor and outdoor photos of mine (mostly indoors). I also like taking multiple shots and close ups. And bundles/piles ♡

Lighting is IMPORTANT guys... lol I can't stress that enough. Start looking up basic photography tips and tricks. Outdoor lighting is your best friend but you can achieve some of the same looks with indoor lighting and different kinds of lightbulbs. Know that you can use a white posterboard to diffuse light and make it softer or soften harsh shadows. Know that lighting from the front flattens your image and lighting from the side better shows off texture.
