Near everyone wearing dreads gets the itchies or bumps from time to time. Here's my experience:
The only time my dreads have ever gotten itchy is when it's been extremely hot. Probably a combo of heat rash on my head and salt from my sweat. My cure was ice cold water poured in between the dreads. Works a treat and takes no special materials of any kind.
I used to get tension bumps around my hair line when I first started to install dreads. For a long while I just didn't install near my hair line and simply braided that hair and kept it tucked under the dreads. Slowly I started adding extensions in, light ones then heavier and heavier. I hardly have a problem now, except occasionally on the back of my head at my nape. Usually I'll just unbraid that dread, give my skin and follicles a break, then try again in a few days.
What do you use for itchies? What do you do when you get bumps? How do you know when bumps mean to un-install or an allergic reaction?

I always get bumpies in the same two places on the back of my head on my hair line, with every install no matter which way I pull that particular section of hair in. I haven't really found a cure. Of course relief is easy, and a quick and gentle set of tugs gets the baby hairs out of the braid and eases up the tension.
